At Rightly, we think that you should know exactly what cookies are being used, and why.

We’re also aware that while we’re all now familiar with the “this site uses cookies" notification whenever we enter a new site, it’s not always clear what they actually are, and what it means for your data.

What exactly are cookies?

In case you don’t know, cookies are text files which are downloaded to your device when you visit a website, and there are many different types.

Some types are great because they improve your experience on the site, letting you navigate between pages more efficiently on the site and remembering your preferences.

There are also others that we don’t like, because they’re unnecessary and don’t put the user first.

It should be up to you.

How do we use cookies?

At Rightly, we only use cookies which are necessary and that help us make our website better for you. We also never advertise on our site and don’t use cookies for this purpose.

Here’s a bit more detail about the two types of cookies we do use:

1) Strictly Necessary Cookies

These cookies are usually only set in response to actions made by you, such as setting your privacy preferences, logging in or filling in forms. These cookies are necessary for the website to function and because of this, we can’t actually switch them off in our systems.

You can set your browser alert you about these cookies, or block them, but that would unfortunately mean that some parts of the our website then wouldn't work. It’s also important to note that these cookies don’t store any personally identifiable information.

2) Analytics Cookies (Google, Hotjar and a few other helpful ones)

These cookies are really helpful to us, because they’re used to collect information about how visitors use our website. We especially like them because they never collect information in a way that can directly identify anyone, but still help us improve our site.

For example, Google cookies let us know things like the number of visitors to the website and blog, where visitors have come to the website from, and the pages that they have then visited. See how they safeguard data here.

We also really like Hotjar because it tells us which parts of the site are ‘hot’, or popular with our users, and which parts could do with improving. It also lets us occasionally ask our users which bits they like best. You can read about Hotjar’s GDPR Commitment here.

To help us identify problems and bugs, as well as give us more insight about how people use our system, we use Amplitude. Using Amplitude also allows our development team to focus their efforts on improving our service, rather than spend lots of time trying to work out what the issues are in the first place. 4) Login related cookies

We use cookies simply to remember whether you’re logged in as you go through our website, so that you don’t have to log in every time you visit a new page.
