According to the ICO, there are a number of signs that indicate your identity may have been stolen.

  1. You've recently misplaced or had important documents stolen, like your driving license or passport.
  2. Your bank statements or utility bills don't arrive in the post.
  3. There are transactions that you don't remember carrying out on your bank statement.
  4. You're refused a loan, credit cards or financial services despite having a good credit rating.
  5. You receive letters in the post in your name from lawyers or debt collectors, for debts that aren't yours.

What can I do if I'm a victim of identity theft?

  1. Contact your bank or building society immediately.
  2. Issue a notice of correction with credit reference agencies, including TransUnion, Equifax and Experian.
  3. Report the incident to Action Fraud.

After the companies have received your request, they have to reply in full within 30 days, or give a valid reason for asking for an extension. However, we're glad to say that most companies normally reply within a week.
