Our data ethics

At Rightly, we believe that your data should be yours, and yours alone.

Our mission is to make the world of data fairer for all involved. So far, we’ve done this by creating a platform that allows you to quickly and easily access your data for free. Our independence and transparency are crucial to this.

We value the trust that our users and community put in us. To meet this we hold ourselves to the highest possible data standards, so that you know that your data is safe with us.

Our Four Key Principles:

1) We’re transparent

We believe that how companies use personal data should be clear and readily available. We make sure that our own business practices, such as why we’re free and what we do with your data, are easily visible at all times.

2) We’re driven by making data better

Our goal is to make data better for all. This means that we put our energy into building the best tools we can to help you have more control over your data. We operate with this charge in mind, within the boundaries of our ethical procedures.

3) We have integrity

We only ever work with businesses to improve their data practices when it benefits consumers (you). We never compromise the rights of our users for business convenience.

Instead, we help companies demonstrate their own commitment to consumer rights through Rightly, where they can respond to requests easily and safely, and build trust with their customers.

4) We’re accountable

We’re fully accountable to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the UK’s independent authority that upholds the information rights of individuals. The ICO has the power to issue large fines in the event of regulatory breaches and a complaints facility open to all.

We also have an internal Ethics team to ensure that the ethical implications of key decisions are considered, and are always in line with our principles. Over the next few months, we’ll be setting up an Ethics Committee made up of external consumer rights organisations and specialists, too. The Committee will meet quarterly to discuss key changes, and give us detailed feedback.

What this means for how we handle your data

  1. The only personal data shared with external organisations through Rightly is by users when they send requests.
  2. Wherever possible, we anonymise data.
  3. We’ll never share the personal data sent back to you with third parties for any marketing or advertising purposes.
  4. Naturally, our data handling processes are compliant with the highest data protection regulations of the UK and EU. The data of our users is never stored outside of these areas.
  5. Data is not held for any longer than it needs to be. Our users can choose how long their data is stored before being deleted, and alter this further if they wish.

Why we’re free

At Rightly, we believe that having more control over your data should be easy and accessible to all, you shouldn't have to pay to use your rights.

That’s why we’ve chosen to keep our core services free, always.

We don't use consumer data for commercial purposes, which means we'll never, ever sell your data. It also means that there are no adverts or hidden costs.
